Cayo police are investigating the murder of a U.S. citizen in San Ignacio Town. This afternoon Cayo police were called to a home on Joseph Andrews Drive where they found the badly decomposed body of 45-year-old Timothy Matheny from Missouri, USA. He was nude and had been stabbed twice to the chest.
He's been in Belize since the 1990's when he came as a Peace Corp volunteer and has been teaching at Mount Carmel High School in Benque Viejo for 8 years.
He was found early this afternoon when neighbors noticed that they hadn't seen him for some time. Police observed no signs of forced entry and noted that some areas of the home had been ransacked, so the theory is that he had let someone in - and they killed him and then took his valuables.
Police are now questioning neighbors to see who that person may have been.
