And in news about another less high profile, but more deadly accident, a 4-year-old child is dead after she was knocked down last night. It happened at around 5 yesterday evening between miles 49 and 50 on the Northern Highway.
49-year-old Hung Ming Ching was driving his pickup from Belize City to Orange Walk when near Carmelita Village he saw a child run from behind a bus in an attempt to cross the road. Hung says he tried to stop his vehicle but because of wet road conditions, he couldn't. He hit the child and she suffered major injuries.
Identified as 4-year-old Lovina Forbes, she had gotten off the bus ahead of her mother when she was knocked down. She was taken to the Northern Regional Hospital and later to the KHMH where she died last night while receiving treatment. Police have charged Hung Ming Ching with manslaughter by negligence, causing death by careless conduct and driving without due care and attention.
And before the night was over, two more people would be killed in a road traffic accident. At around 9 last night police visited an area about half mile from the Trio Village junction on the Southern Highway where there they found a greed Rodeo overturned on the right hand side of the road.
The driver 43-year-old Kenrick Ellis told police that his SUV experienced a double blowout of its tires causing him to loose control and overturn. Along with Ellis at the time was 63 year old Mona Ellis who died on the spot, and 33 year old Kenon Rodney who died while being transported to the medical clinic in Independence.
Kenrick Ellis, 41-year-old Christine Ellis and 39-year-old Lenna Morgan received varying degrees of injuries but are not life threatening. Kenrick Ellis has meanwhile been served with a notice of intended prosecution.
