The IDB today signed off on a US$450,000 grant to modernize Belize's budgetary process, improve the quality of statistics produced and sharpen government auditing. Its part of a long term development plan and the IDB's country representative Rodrigo Mayen said the money is all about institutional strengthening in a few key departments.

Rodrigo Mayen, IDB Representative
"This program seeks to strengthen the performance capacity by designing an implementing system for management, administration, and measurement of results."

Hon. Mark Espat, Minister of National Development
"Success will to a large extent be measured by the extent to which we integrate the planning and budgeting processes that in the past have been largely divorced, especially before the season of public sector financial reform started in 2004. This model demands an acceleration in the political and public service culture of Belize. It will no longer be about a single clinic built in any year or single school to be opened but about broad quality of life indicators. Success in this area will go a long way to building transparency and sustainability into public sector initiatives and we believe we'll inspire confidence of our people in their government."

All the studies were done previously and today's grant money is for implementation.
