A Nicaraguan security guard is in jail for pulling off a wild late night car jacking last night in Belize City. He is 32-year-old Fernando Duarte and police say he hijacked 32-year-old taxi man Luis Navarro's Geo Prism.
Navarro told police that around 2:30 this morning he was returning from dropping two passengers off in the West Landivar area when a tall Hispanic man flagged him down at West Landivar's intersection with Princess Margaret Drive. Navarro says he got out to open the door and that's when the passenger turned punisher and clubbed him in the face with what he believed was a gun.
The man then jumped into the driver's seat and ordered Navarro in the car. He then demanded to know where Navarro lived. Navarro told him New Road and the man headed in that direction. But to do so, he had to pass the police station on Queen Street and Navarro used that opportunity to jump from the moving vehicle. He dashed into the station for help and officers set chase. They caught up with Duarte in Navarro's Geo Prism at the corner of Victoria Street and New Road.
This morning Duarte was charged with robbery. He was remanded into custody until May 29th. Police say they did not find any gun in the car.
