He pleaded guilty to killing 51-year-old Gabriel Pinto with a baseball bat and today 27-year-old Darwin 'Granny' Soberanis was sentenced to serve 18 years for the crime.
In October of 2004, San Ignacio Police alleged that Soberanis lay waited Pinto and attacked him in his home with his own aluminum baseball bat. Pinto had disapproved of his daughter's relationship with Soberanis and urged the young lady to break it off.
On April 26th Soberanis pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter and today was his sentencing. Justice Troadio Gonzalez heard mitigation pleas from his attorney Simeon Sampson and Fr. John Stochl of the Kolbe Foundation.
In passing sentence Justice Gonzalez considered an impact statement from the victim's family and noted that he had four previous convictions all of them for violent crimes.
