On Monday afternoon, NEMO opened a warehouse in Independence Village. The warehouse was built through a joint effort of the U.S. and Belize Militaries, businessman Tony Zabaneh and NEMO. According to National Emergency Coordinator George Lovell, as a central part of its disaster response plan, NEMO hopes to establish regional warehouses in 3 locations: Belmopan, Orange Walk and this one in Independence. In his remarks he explained how it will serve the south.

George Lovell, NEMO Coordinator
"The secretariat's vision is to have relief supplies stored at strategic locations throughout the country in order to provide timely and uninterrupted services to the country in the time of need. What we were looking for were trying to get a site that is co-located to the sea, the land, and to the airports that we have within these areas."

Robert Deiter, U.S. Ambassador
"This project when you reflect on it is a successful effort between the government and private donors and private efforts and it's a successful exercise between the militaries of Belize and the United States, the government of the United States, the government of Belize, and the private sector and private families of Belize. So together in efforts where we can focus our energies on a common goal, it is obvious that we can do great things together and this warehouse is an example of that."

The U.S will assist with shelves and fencing for the warehouse.
