A 15-year-old boy is tonight in the KHMH barely able to breathe after he was savagely assaulted with a knife by another teen on Thursday night. 15-year-old Shaquille Billary was stabbed as many as six times and left for dead by another teenager. The argument was over a homemade gun made out of the frame of a bicycle. It's a seemingly trivial object, but it led to what could have been a deadly fight. Billary survived and today he told Keith Swift his Lesson.
Keith Swift Reporting,
This bloody shirt is what 15-year-old Shaquille Billary was wearing on Thursday night when he was viciously stabbed on Logwood Street. He was attacked with a knife from behind by a young man he'd had an altercation with earlier.
Shaquille Billary, Stabbing Victim
"He stabbed me in my back. I got weak right down and fell down and he started to punch me ion my face, kick up me, and I told him to leave me along and he continued to kick me up and stab me too. The place he stabbed me was on my right arm. I just lifted up my self and walked home and while I was walking, blood was jut spraying."
And with blood streaming down his back and arm - Shaquille mustered enough energy to walk from Logwood Street to his home on Banak Street. He had been stabbed six times - on his back, arms, and stomach, he never made it to Banak Street because he collapsed on the sidewalk. He thought he was going to die.
Shaquille Billary,
"I think would have died and when I reached on Magazine Road I went on the sidewalk and laid down and felt like my heart stopped and then it started to beat slowly. I was short of breath."
But Shaquille survived to tell the tale of his near death experience. He has stab wounds on his back and arm - but more seriously - one of his lungs collapsed. He now has to breathe using this low grade respirator. Shaquille's cousin is Lonnett Garnett.
Lonnett Garnett,
"My cousin got stabbed. He came to the hospital and the policeman didn't want to do anything. Me and my auntie, we went to the police station and when we went there they sent us to CIB and they were shoving us around. They told us they cannot deal with my cousin it must be gun related because he lived on Banak Street.
I don't like how they did it. My cousin doesn't do anybody nobody. He likes his animal, he works at the bakery - my cousin didn't do anyone anything. I really don't like that. My cousin is just getting better because maybe he would have gotten paralyzed or maybe he would have died. My cousin's fate was gone that he would have died, he even wanted to jump through the window."
But Shaquille is alive and - for this 15 year old - that's good enough. It was a revelation for him and now he plans to change his life.
Shaquille Billary,
"Last night I got up and prayed and kneeled down in front of my bed and I prayed."
Keith Swift,
So this incident will make you change your life?
Shaquille Billary,
"I will change my life, I will join the church and I will work my father."
Call it a reawakening, call him enlightened, or just lucky to be alive.
Police are seeking one suspect identified only as "Conrad."
