He confessed to being behind the wheel when a man was flung from the pan of a pickup and died but Justo Reyes won't have to spend a single day in jail. On Tuesday, Justo Reyes pleaded guilty to causing death by careless conduct for killing Javier Alamilla.
Today Justice Adolph Lucas imposed sentence and it was a fine. Reyes will have to pay $5,000 by February 29th of 2008. If he fails to pay, he will spend a year in jail. His license was also suspended for 8 months.
The judge did not order him to pay any compensation to the deceased family because the father of the deceased said that they did not want any compensation for his son's death, Javier. He also said that he was not taking any civil action against the accused for the loss of his son.Reyes then told the court that since the accident he has stopped drinking.
Alamilla was in a pickup along with 6 other men who had been drinking. Reyes was driving the pickup, heading down North Front Street when he made a sharp turn which launched Alamilla from where he was sitting; he landed 50 feet from the pickup. He died half an hour later. A blood urine test revealed that Reyes' alcohol concentration above the prescribed limit.
