They were accused of raping a college student in front of her boyfriend and late this evening a jury unanimously convicted Derrick Sampson and Michael Trapp. The incident occurred around midnight on May 13th of 2006. The victims were a young couple who were sitting on the seaside near the roundabout on marine parade when they were approached by Sampson and Trapp.
One of them pulled out a gun and pointed it in the face of the 21-year-old University of Belize student. They snatched her gold chain and took her boyfriend's cell phone. But it didn't end there. Sampson raped her while Trapp held a gun to her head. They also ordered her boyfriend to take off all his clothes and ordered him to go into the sea. Police eventually responded to the scene and that's when Trapp and Sampson fled.
They were each charged with two counts of robbery. In addition, Sampson was charged with rape and Trapp was charged with abetment to rape. The jury deliberated for two hours. There were only 8 jurors since the ninth became ill this morning. Trapp and Sampson will be sentenced on Monday.
