A freak accident last night has left a neighbourhood in a wreck. Jacqueline Godwin found that this accident gives new meaning to the term, home invasion. Here’s the story.
Jacqueline Godwin Reporting,
The driver of this wrecked car identified as Raul Medina lies in a coma at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. Witnesses to the accident say he was speeding on Faber’s Road Extension around three on Saturday evening when he lost control. What happened next stunned an entire neighborhood and left two families shaken.
Diana Hislop, Witness/Neighbour
“I hear something like a bomb, like pow, and at that time all the plywood were down here which were cracking up so I took the baby and I ran so. When I came out here I didn’t see nothing; I didn’t see my fence, I didn’t see my gate, I didn’t see nothing. When I peeped I saw the car way over so.”
The car was found next door in another neighbor’s yard. It is believed that the only thing that stopped the vehicle from plowing through another fence was this pine tree. First, it jumped the drain, grazed this house, and then barreled through this narrow yard space before it demolished a doghouse, then bounded unto the adjacent property, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.

“Now I don’t even want to sit down in the yard again. I sit at the back better because I don’t trust the front here because you could never tell when they are trying to overtake. I don’t know it go over that, I don’t know how it got through my side and thing. I don’t know how it did that yet. I don’t know how he did it. I know he was on a speed, I hard the speed and then I heard pow and it knocked against the house and knocked down a picture and all those things off the wall.”
Raul Medina suffered severe head injuries and is reported to have lost one of his eyes, from this fence post that punched through the car’s windshield.
Diana Hislop,
“From out of my post, where the fence was, that got him in the eye because it is two, one on this side and one on the driver’s side. The

post from here caught him along his right and the next eye went through the next windshield by the next passenger side. I saw the body and here is full of things and then I came home.”
Pearline Polonio, Witness/Neighbour
“I looked at the person and everything and then I saw the condition of him, the whole jaw, the whole head side tear off and then his eye was coming out so I told my daughter just to hurry call the ambulance and the police.”
After tearing through Diana Hislop’s property the car then crashed into Pearline Polonio’s yard.
Pearline Polonio,
“I heard the knock and I said my God my kids, it sounded like it was in my house. And then when I run across I still didn’t see where the vehicle ended up from in my yard. We were expecting that it would come from the front, an accident like that would come from the front of the yard, but side of the yard – nobody would ever believe that happened. I don’t know what to say but I said God works in mysterious ways because my kids were not outside at that time. The only one was my little daughter who was going to hang the clothes and when she was going, she said she lifted her head and in split seconds the vehicle flew past her.”
Residents who live along this stretch of Faber’s Road fear that one day it will be their children who are hurt. Today they are appealing to the proper authorities to do something before it is too late. One thing they would like to see are speed bumps. Presently there are not in this area.
Pearline Polonio,
“There has to be careful and I think they have to try and put pedestrian walks because it is too dangerous. Faber’s Road is too straight it looks like to me so they have to do something…parents will cry.”
Diana Hislop,
“Thank God I was not there, thank God because if I was there, I would have been a dead person. I wouldn’t have been here to talk to you. The lamppost could have fallen on my house and killed me right here. I was worrying about all kinds of things. I had tremblings the whole day.”
Pearline Polonio,
“But this is a very serious curve and then they have to be more careful because Faber’s Road has a lot of kids and then parents don’t have eyes all about to watch the kids. Me and my kids like to stand up by our gate and we just like to look on and then sometime around the curve this one is going, this one is coming, and then a next one would come from behind and overtake – and when they overtake like that you don’t know what will happen. So we sometimes see it before it happens and we try to move.”
