Primary schoolers have the Coca-Cola National Spelling Bee and secondary schoolers have the Math Olympiad. It’s the annual event in its second year where students from across the country get to test their wits against each other on a high tech game show style interface. Eliminations started yesterday at the UB Campus in Belmopan and 7NEWS was there.

“The young people of this country are the future beneficiaries of our system. Our contributors are our people who benefit, right. So the Social Security system is for the people of Belize. So the better we develop the children of Belize, the better people we will have as members of this system and it is important for the children to develop the mathematical skills. It is a skill that they will take with them with them the rest of their lives and we are looking forward in the years to come to see the impact of the math Olympiad on the young people of Belize and the results at their CXC level.
The winners of these regional, like the competitors for the north would come and the one from Belize and the one from the south, west and so on will meet at the finals which will take place in a few weeks time at the end of the regionals and that will be the big winner of the math Olympiad.”
The Math Olympiad consists of 7 regional competitions and the national championship is scheduled for March thirteenth. The goals of the math competition are to improve the national average in maths at the secondary level, stimulate enthusiasm and love for the subject, develop mathematical flexibility in solving problems, strengthen mathematical creativity, foster team and school spirit and provide satisfaction, joy and thrill of meeting challenges.
