When a teenager opened fire yesterday morning on Haulze Street – there could have been deadly consequences for a 3-week-old baby boy. The shots rang out about 7:45 am and the gunman was targeting 34 year old Winfield Tasher. Tasher says he was sitting on a car in front of his yard at 4462 Haulze Street when three teenage boys approach him. He says one of the men pulled out a 38 revolver and aimed it at him. A shot was fired and Tasher ran. The shooter fired four more bullets – which found themselves in the home of 18-year-old Tracy Meighan. One bullet came dangerously close to hitting her 3-year-old son – and where another bullet shattered a mirror, which fell into pieces on her 3-week-old baby boy. The children’s grandfather recounted for us – off camera yesterday morning’s horrifying minutes.
Witness,
“I heard a loud bang first but I didn’t realize it was bullets or gun and anything like that. And afterwards, I heard two more bang bang and then I got up off the bed, I stood up inside my room and afterwards I went back and sat down because I didn’t hear anymore. Then the fourth shot came out and then where I was sitting in front of my bed, my grandson was just in front of the chair which was moved by the impact of the bullet coming through both walls, the outer wall and the inner wall, and hit the chair you are looking at right now.”
Keith Swift,
I understand that the mirror shattered on your three week old grandson.
Witness,
“Yes that is the said bullet that passed through her bedroom from off the wall outside, through her bedroom, through the mirror, and the shattered mirror – the baby was on a bed on the floor, because the bed that they have was too small for the mattress, so she just put her baby there. And when I went over there to look at the hole, the baby was filled with glass. All the shutters from the mirror was on the baby.”
Keith Swift,
Concerning the incident that occurred in your bedroom, what was the reaction of you grandson when this happened? Did he know how close he came to being shot?
Witness,
“No, to be honest the child didn’t know nothing. If this chair wasn’t here, God knows this child would have been a dead child by now.”
Police have two young men detained but are still searching the shooter. Winfield Tasher says they want him dead because of domestic dispute in the neighborhood involving his kids. Tasher’s 9-year-old and 1 year old daughters were also home at the time of the shooting – as well as his common-law wife Lillian McCullock who is pregnant.
