The remains of what police are initially calling a fetus were discovered this afternoon at the Belize City dump. A worker at the dumpsite made the discovery and he told his supervisor who in turn called the police. The remains were picked up by police this afternoon and they await a medical exam. Rigon Gomez found the remains and spoke to us off camera.

Rigon Gomez, Found Fetus
“In the morning I was up here working up a thing and the dirt truck came and dumped the dirt and meanwhile I was digging and what’s not and the tractor came and pushed the dirt a little while ago. I came and looked over there and saw like a two or three jancrow eating something and went and checked and saw that it was a little baby they were eating. So I informed the man who went and throw the dump and he informed the police man and thing. So that’s all what happened this morning and so.”

Keith Swift,
Around what time this morning was that?

Rigon Gomez,
“About ten or eleven, going into one o’clock so.”

Keith Swift,
What did you think when you came across it?

Rigon Gomez,
“Well it made me stop work because I have kids and thing same way so it just gave ma a bad feeling so I just, like I don’t really want to do anything again so I just relaxed and watched it and wondered about the people who would do something like that to their own child.”

Sgt. Hilberto Romero, Crimes Investigations Branch
“We received a call of some remains here and so we visited the area and we found what appears to be the remains of a fetus until we get a doctor’s examinations but it appears to be the remains of a fetus. We cannot ascertain at this time, the medical pathologist will examine it and give us his findings on that.”

Keith Swift,
Discarding a fetus, is that in and of itself a crime? Did the person who did this commit a crime?

Sgt. Hilberto Romero,
“Well we will conduct an investigation and definitely if it a crime was committed, we will try to locate what occurred here.”

Keith Swift,
What would the police want the person who discarded this fetus to do?

Sgt. Hilberto Romero,
“Well to come forward and tell us what happened. We need that information to close off our investigation.”

Again police say they cannot determine the maturity of the fetus until a medical exam has been conducted.
