Prime Minister Dean Barrow was one of three CARICOM region leaders who met with U.S. President George Bush at the White House in Washington D.C. this morning. Barrow joined two other new Prime Ministers, Hubert Ingraham of the Bahamas, and David Thompson of Barbados.
They discussed regional matters, focussing mostly on trade and tourism. In tourism, the issue was the safety and ease of movement for U.S. tourists in the Caribbean and in trade the leaders lobbied for the renewal of the Caribbean Basin Initiative, which expires in September.
Also today in Washington, Prime Minister Barrow met with the Secretary General of the OAS, Jose Miguel Insulza. They discussed OAS initiatives in Belize, including the organization’s role in mediating the Belize Guatemala territorial conflict.
