In May of 2006, we ran a story with a script straight out of Hollywood: original “bad-man” Police Edward Broaster came Under heavy fire from a group of marauding criminals on a wild crime spree through the residential communities of Belama and Buttonwood Bay. They shot right through the windshield of Broaster’s patrol car – coming within inches of hitting the senior officer. It was like a script from a movie alright, but there’s no Hollywood ending.
Today after almost 2 years of appearing in court the men accused of the crime 19 year old Lincoln Sinclair, and 26 year old Kareem Cattouse were cleared of all charges after the DPP’s office entered a nolle pros motion. The DPP’s directive is that it is simply unable to proceed further with the case. One other accused man, Lester Young was cleared of his charges last week.
The trio had been charged for attempted murder, damage to property and aggravated assault. But they were never caught during the chase, and were only linked to the shooting by the circumstantial evidence of the car that was used in the shootout. The owner said he never gave the suspects permission to use the car, but did give it to another man, who in turn did lend the car to the trio, who it was alleged used it in the high speed shootout. A plausible story but too shaky to hold up in court, it appears.
