Today a thirty two year old man charged with the aggravated assault of his twenty one year old common law wife and threatening words was not remanded to the Hattieville Prison but ordered to the Rockview institution where for he will undergo psychiatric evaluation.

Peter Hemsley’s mental status came into question during his appearance before Senior Magistrate Dorothy Flowers today. According to court reports, the accused started talking out of context and appeared to be uncertain of what he was saying and not of sound mind. In court, Hemsley began rattling off about a series of things that had nothing to do with the case. Hemsley told the court that he was being set up by the complainant and that pleading guilty for a crime he did not do, did not matter.

Seeing his odd behaviour in court, Senior Magistrate Flowers ordered that Hemsley be taken to Rockview hospital for two weeks and that the court be provided with a psychiatric evaluation on his condition.

On April sixth, Hemsley’s common law wife told police that she became fearful for her life and two old month baby after she claim Hemsley threatened to hurt her. According to the young woman, they were at home when Hemsley armed with a machete told her “dah you soul ah want, ah wah kill you tonight.” The woman claimed Hemsley then chased her in the yard with the machete.
