Nuri Mohammed – whether you know him as a talk show host, a youth counsellor or the former Prime Minister’s Press Secretary – he’s a household name – and tonight that name has taken a hard public hit. Mohammed has been arrested and charged for marijuana possession. It is a negligible amount, 28 grams, about an ounce – what would be called “a catch” – enough to roll about 10 sticks.
The 59 year old was caught near his car on a dirt road in Ladyville. Police claim he tried to run when he saw them coming but he was intercepted and searched. They found a small black bag with marijuana inside his back pocket. While they were escorting him to the police station, he allegedly threw another plastic bag out the car window. Police recovered that and found another small amount of cannabis.
The contents of both bags added up to the 28 grams. But that wasn’t the end of his ordeal. Police believed Mohammed was under the influence of alcohol, and when he was asked to submit a sample at the police station, he refused. And then, further checks of his documents showed that his car was unlicensed.
So in court this morning, Muhammed who was represented by attorney Simeon Sampson was slapped with three charges; those are: driving an unlicensed motor vehicle, possession of a controlled drug and failure to provide a specimen. Muhammad pleaded not guilty to all charges. He met bail of $1,500 plus one surety of the same amount.
And while it looks to be an embarrassing ordeal for the former Prime Ministerial Press Secretary, he was afforded some courtesy as he was given station bail on Wednesday night at the Ladyville Station meaning he did not have to spend the holiday in custody. The case was adjourned until June second.
