And while that 82 year old is still missing – tonight the family of a 62 year old is making funeral arrangements after he was knocked down and killed last night. It was another Northern Highway pedestrian fatality within city limits – except this time the man driving is the neighbour of the man he knocked down and killed. I found out more.
Jacqueline Godwin Reporting,
The plate of food sixty two year old Roy Menzies better known as Speedy was carrying home can still be seen in the drain where his body landed after being struck by a vehicle sometime after seven by mile two on the Northern Highway.
Anthony Watters, Nephew of the deceased
“We got a call and we understand that he had been knocked down by some vehicle and when we went out there we saw a truck was parked on the side and he was laying on the ground and we understand that the truck knocked him down, he was walking on the sidewalk, the side of the street and the truck knocked him so hard that he went into the drain and the person I understand came out of the vehicle and took him out of the drain and noticed that he had already,

his body was lifeless. So what we did, we waited and we spoke to the police and we understand they pronounced him dead right there. It seems the knock he got killed him right away.”
The vehicle’s driver has been identified as Carlos Romero, a resident of Belama Phase 2 and a neighbour of the deceased.
Anthony Watters,
“And it was shocking to know that it was our own neighbour. Unfortunately that is the situation. It was very shocking to know that, we are very upset that that has happened but that is the reality; it is our neighbour.”
It is also reported that at the time of the fatal knockdown Roy Menzies was seen staggering along the highway.
Jacqueline Godwin,
“Who do you believe is responsible?”
Anthony Watters,
“Well we believe the driver definitely because he was on the side, he was walking on the side. Yes people will probably say that that area is dark but every vehicle has headlights. Obviously you need to take precautions when you are passing a populated area and we understand that this driver was speeding at the time and at the same time he was at a area that we consider very dark and this happened. So we believe the driver definitely is responsible for this and I hope that we could get some kind of solution to this, whether its by compensation or someone at least come to the family and let us know that they are sorry for this and some kind of response.”
Roy Menzies was a former long time employee of Bowen and Bowen Limited. Today his nephew Anthony Watters appeal to both motorist and authorities to improve the road conditions especially that stretch of highway where his uncle was killed.
As police investigate, a notice of intended prosecution has been issued to Romero.
