The news of missing taxi-men is always troubling because in a disturbing number of cases, they turn up dead; there have been at least three taxi men killed in different parts of the country this year. And that’s why tonight there is great concern in Belmopan about a missing senior citizen who also drives a cab. His family is frantically worried and Belmopan police have gotten involved. I travelled to Belmopan for the story.

It’s been three days and no one knows what happened to eighty two year old well known Belmopan taxi driver James Young better known as Mr. Jimmy. This is the parking lot where the elderly cab driver would be seen in his light coloured gold Geo Prism with license plate number BMP-D00010 but to date both driver and car remain missing. According to the family they are not only concerned that they do not know where is their dad but that eh suffers from hypertension and everyday that goes by without nay word, the chances are slim that he will be found alive and well.

“On Wednesday morning we went and filed a report to the Belmopan Police
Headquarters and from then we will be working very closely with the police. Even up to now presently we are still working closely with them and they are working on it. They are out searching and we are relying on the police right now to find out exactly where my dad is and whether he is dead or whether he is alive.”

“But do you think by now he would have been in contact with the family?”
Gilbert Young,
“Well from how I know my dad if he was alive and had access to his phone he would have definitely contacted somebody to let them know what’s going on so this is very strange to me personally from how I know my dad. Last night was the second night he slept out of his house which was something that he never had done.”
Belmopan Police have been following up on several reports.
Gilbert Young,
“Well from what I get to understand that he was waiting for a passenger and while he was waiting for that passenger, while the passenger was heading towards the vehicle, she saw my dad took off and immediately she called my dad on his phone and to know avail he did not answer.”
Jacqueline Godwin,
“When the passenger was approaching your dad’s car when he suddenly took off, did she notice if someone else was in the vehicle?”
Gilbert Young,
“Well I cannot tell you that at this time because I don’t have no information on that.”
Acting officer in charge of Belmopan Police Inspector David Chi says James Young was last seen around one on Tuesday afternoon when he went home to give his granddaughter a plate of food.

“Information is that he bought some food at the market and he left for his residence where he dropped off a food for one of his granddaughter. Since then he has not been heard from or seen since. We are hoping for the best but police are in search for him along with family members to see if we could find Mr. Young. We don’t know what transpired for him not being around or for his missing so the police are investigating this matter.
We have police officers combing the area to find him, from Belmopan up to the Benque area through feeder roads, off roads and even bushes, some bushy areas which we believe may be used if anything happened to Mr. Young.”

“And the reports the police have been receiving are all being followed up but they are not leading you guys to anything.”
Insp. David Chi,
“We have gotten some information, not leads. We have checked into those information so far and we have not come up with anything fruitful with respect to Mr. Young.”
Jacqueline Godwin,
“What is troubling about this missing person’s case?”
Insp. David Chi,
“Well Mr. Young is a well known person in this area. He is 82 years old, he is originally from this area and he has a health condition so if he is somewhere out there and not getting his medication, it will put his life at risk hence the reason why the police and members of the community along with his family is trying to locate Mr. Young.”

“Our trust and our hope is in God because he knows everything. He sees everything and God knows where he is right now and God knows whether he is dead or whether he is alive.”
