And while the very live threat of gang warfare carries over into what will be a tense weekend for those living in gang affiliated areas - senseless violence was also on display last night.
A 45 year old Chinese grocer, Shi Rong Mei - who operates Deng's store - which is fully barred - at the corner of Prince Street and East Canal - was shot in the shoulder.
Reports are that around 8:45pm, a man approached the barred window, ordered a philly cigar and when Deng got the cigar, the gunman then pulled out a handgun and fired twice. Notably, the gunman did not ask for money or try to rob Mei, he just opened fire. v According to Li Mark Chang, Deng's brother was shot in his leg four years ago in Jasmine street. We note that in 2010, two persons were killed at this same corner of Prince and East Canal.
Mei is in the hospital recovering from his wounds - which are not considered life threatening.
