41 year-old Jane Rose Chueng, a Belizean living in the US State of Mississippi, is out on bail tonight after she was busted with over 45 thousand US dollars which she failed to declare to the authorities when she entered Belize.
According to the police, she arrived on a flight at around 11 yesterday morning, and when she went up to the immigration officer for her documents to be processed, she was informed that her carry-on bag and purse would be searched.
One of the officers at the airport opened her purse and found 45,903 dollars in US currency and a traveler's check for an additional 1,500 US dollars. She couldn't provide any declaration form for the money and as a result, she was arrested and charged with failure to declare funds over $10,000 in Belize currency.
She pleaded not guilty to the charge when she was arraigned before Senior Magistrate Sharon Frazer, and she was granted bail of $60,000 with the conditions that she must surrender all her travel documents until the case is heard to completion.
She is to return to court on September 18, where it is expected that the trial will be heard to completion if the Financial Intelligence Unit is ready with all their evidence.
