The new executive of the Christian Workers Union, and Audrey Matura-Shepherd becoming the president should bring positive developments to public profile of the Union, but not tonight. That's because 25 year-old Alex Reid, a former office assistant of the union was convicted of multiple counts of forgery-related charges.
Reid stood trial before Justice Adolph Lucas, where he faced 10 counts of claiming upon a forged document. He was accused of cashing 10 forged cheques from the CWU's account at the First Caribbean Bank between the months of May and June of 2007, which amounted to $6,500. Several witnesses testified against him, and his confession statement was already admitted into evidence. Some witnesses testified against Reid were Former President Antonio Gonzalez and former Secretary General James McFoy, and one of the signatories of the cheques.
Also several tellers testified that he himself entered the bank and cashed these bogus cheques. It was alleged that he cashed as much as 40 cheques, to receive a total amount of $18,000 but the indictment was only for 10 of those.
Faced with all that evidence, Reid changed his plea to guilty, which was accepted by the court. He will be sentenced tomorrow by Justice Adolph Lucas.
