Tonight, there is shocking security video of a ruthless robbery which happened on King Street in Belize City last night at 10:00. Captured from the Mikado building, it shows two unsuspecting female tourists walking on King Street towards Albert Street in front of Monica's Pawn shop. That's when two men pull up quickly on bicycles. One of them snatch the purse of the woman on the right, while the other wrestled away the purse from the woman on the left. We see the women on the right putting up a fight, and trying to challenge her attacker, who then uses his bicycle to throw her to the ground. She falls backward, and he dashes off against traffic. Undeterred, her friend sets chase - and eventually two of them do, but the robber is gone.
We figured they had to be staying in the area, so 7News went to follow up on the story in the neighborhood. We learned that the women were guests at Caribbean Palm Inn, which is at the corner of regent and King Street - about a block away from where they were robbed. They took a late night stroll - reportedly in the company of a young man from the George Street area - who took them to get food at New Fortune Restaurant which is near the Bus Terminal on East Collet Canal - about a half mile away.
They were walking back unaccompanied when the robbers came up on them. They got away with both their purses which had some money in them and the key for their room at the Inn. In a panic, they reportedly asked to switch rooms since the key was in the hands of criminals. The night passed without incident and they reportedly left out to the cayes early this morning saying they were terrified of Belize City.
Police say that no report has been made, but our reports say that they did go to police. Whatever the case, we're told a suspect is in custody, but police need a complainant.
The women - who are US nationals - are believed to be in their mid - twenties. They came to Belize on vacation last Friday and had been socializing with a number of young men in the area.
