On Monday, we told you about the swift arrest that police made for the murder of 28-year-old Zheng Cheng Liu. You'll remember that this Belize City businessman was found shot to death on the George Price Highway between miles 4 and 5.
On Saturday night, Liu left his workplace on Central American Boulevard to respond to a vehicle problem that one of his business associates was having. He recently got into the car dealership business, and he was reportedly called out to that area because a vehicle that he recently got shipped to Belize broke down on the highway. But, something happened out on the road, and Liu was shot and killed while he was leaving the area at around 9:30 p.m.
Quick police response allowed the cops to intercept persons who fled the scene in Liu's vehicle. They detained one person, and 2 days later they announced that they were bringing a murder charge against 26-year-old Joseph Vacarro for Zheng's killing. We got a chance to ask police about the arrest today in a press briefing, and here's how that conversation went:
Supt. Alejandro Cowo - OC, CIB Belize City
"Reference the shooting death of Mr. Zheng Chen Lui, on Saturday police arrested and charged 27 year old Joseph Vaccaro of a Neal's Penn Road address for the crime of murder. I know that we had other persons in custody and police are still working in this investigation."
Reporter
"Mr. Vaccaro, how was he detained? Because we understand that he was one of several persons that were found with the vehicle, with Mr. Zheng's vehicle."
Supt. Alejandro Cowo
"He was one of the suspects that inside the vehicle of Mr. Zheng."
Reporter
"And nobody else was there?"
Supt. Alejandro Cowo
"We will not disclose the rest of information at this time, as I mentioned, yes the investigation is still ongoing, we had several suspects detained that were released but the investigation is still open and we are continuing with that investigation. It does not necessarily mean that only Mr. Vaccaro was charged, means he will be the only person."
Police have confirmed that Zheng Lui had a licensed firearm, and currently, that weapon is missing.
