There was a traffic accident this morning between miles 47 and 48 on the Hummingbird Highway which caused a Freightliner Truck and trailer and to slam into a car.
Albert Morey, the 27-year-old truck driver, told police that at about 11:00, he was heading toward Dangriga Town. According to Morey, a small car, which was parked on the right-hand side of the highway attempted to do a U-turn, in front of him. He said he hit the brakes as hard as he could to try and avoid hitting the car. He was not able to do so, and his truck slammed into it. The truck ended up running off the road, and its trailer overturned about 25 feet off to the left side of the highway. The car burst into flames and ended up completely destroyed.
The Ministry of Works had to assist the authorities to get the vehicles off the scene.
The occupants of the car, 25-year-old William Vega, 34-year-old Otto Castellanos, 18-year-old Irma Yolanda Pau, 28-year-old Diana Pau, were all taken to the Western Regional Hospital for injuries they suffered during the impact, and burn injuries they suffered after the vehicle caught on fire. All 4 were admitted in stable condition at the Western Regional Hospital.
