And when social desperation leads to crime - it ends up as a police problem. But even with COVID and rising unemployment, the Department led by Commissioner Chester Williams was able to cut back major crime significantly last year.
But, still, some say - or maybe fantasize - that COMPOL Chester is on the way out.
And, they point to the leaked audio recording in which Police Commissioner Chester Williams was heard berating a police constable who stopped him during curfew hours.
In the recording, the Commissioner is heard chewing out the officer, and so today, the press asked his Ministerial boss, Kareem Musa, about that terse conversation.
Musa told us that while he personally wouldn't have used that tone and word choice, he is interested in hearing the entire recording for proper context. Here are those comments:
Williams says the officer's secret recording only samples one portion of the meeting which he says started and ended in a civil tone. He has referred the breach to the Professional Standards Branch.
We note that the constable in question was charged and convicted disciplinarily in connection with a drug plane landing in the south in December of 2018. After that he was transferred to the city.
