They are the most notorious family in Western Belize - and tonight, yet another Hyde brother has met a tragic end.

It's shocking and brazen violence on what was meant to be one the most sacred weekend of the year.

And it left 41-year-old Clifford Hyde, a man just 4 months free from a 15-year jail sentence, a murder victim, viciously gunned down in his own yard. Cherisse Halsall reports.

This is Russel Hyde's Compound on Young Bank Road near Roaring Creek Village. A double fenced watchtower that's intimidating to approach especially for those who mean its resident's harm.

Still, it's the place where the notorious outlaw lost his life, ambushed by a gunman who shot him four times at point-blank range.

And over the Easter weekend, a similar gruesome fate befell his brother in the very same place.

That makes Clifford is 3rd Hyde to die on the property joining Russel and cousin Steven Hyde whose body was found there in May of 2015 buried in a shallow grave.

At this point, many in the village may have concluded that the Hyde's are cursed. At least that's what eldest brother Alvin Hyde speculated when I spoke to him this morning but he maintains that it's nothing to do with black magic and everything to do with ignorance and spite.

"They had a little function on the hilltop right over there and they say two people called him and told him to come and when he got there, I don't know a little while and probably they had a little misunderstanding among themselves and I understand that he left, when he left and went to his vehicle that he'd arrived in and the vehicle refused to start and the person came from behind and shot him in the back and supposed ----so he told them well you've already stated better you finish me."

This morning the police pointed to speculation that Hyde was leaving the event to escape an altercation.

"During the course of the investigation it is being said that we were not able to confirm that the deceased along with another person had an argument prior to the incident."

Reporter:
"Can you say if that person were at the gathering?"

ACP Joseph Myvette
"Yes, he was."

"Police have a number of persons detained in relation to this investigation, so far and it is expected that charges will be proffered against one of those persons later today."

But whatever the charges and whatever measure of justice they bring won't return yet another lost son to a family that's had to become accustomed to terminal violence.

Clifford had recently been released from jail, having spent 15 years serving a charge of murder. And back in 2006 he told our cameras that it was a trumped up charge.

Clifford Hyde, Convicted Killer

"They chanced us, we didn't get a fair trial in the court but at the end of the day life goes on and we're going to the Court of Appeal and that's it right there."

And whatever he thought of that sentence, he served it out, never knowing that his death wasn't far behind his freedom.

Alvin Hyde Jr., Brother of the Deceased
"He's been out approximately four months now. I think he came out in November and he bought up his things and he fixed up his house, secured himself and he started moving around and started to do business."

Hyde's business was cut short and this morning as eldest brother Alvin Hyde prepared to add yet another sibling to the family plot he wondered out loud if there was anything he could have done to curtail this most recent tragedy.

Alvin Hyde Jr., Brother of the Deceased
"I was supposed to have called this man and to tell him hear what after 15 years this is the first easter you're spending out, easter season lotta thing happen so try to stay home and recreate yourself and stay with your daughter and your little close people around you but I never did get the break to talk to him."

"Most of the time when I have the time and I could talk to him the man is with his colleagues and I'm just hello bap, bap, look on and observe and if I could get a break and catch him by himself I tell ah, I tell you bout this crowd and then people yah, I know it's your family but hello, hello, do it like me."

"A function was happening at this place and I know a couple of people that were at the function so what the police should do in their investigation is to go and find out who all were at this gathering on this hill and interview and take a statement from everybody who was up there, as much as they can get, take a statement and go through it and see what they can gather and do a throughout investigation a proper investigation because it's not the first time this thing happens on this hill in this area it's about the second or the third time."

And while Hyde's brother called for that thorough investigation the cops say that would be difficult given the lack of cooperation they've confronted from the majority of those who were present at the hilltop function.

Also injured in the incident was Clifford Hyde's niece Anya Galvez, she has since been transported to the K.H.M.H where she underwent treatment for swelling on the brain. Galvez has responded well to treatment and is set to be released from the hospital tomorrow.
