Now, police have not made any arrests for Saturday night's double murder of Raymond Garcia and Wayne Crawford - but they do have suspects. Still, putting together enough eyewitness evidence to make an arrest has been challenging.
And that's why, to put an immediate "brakes" on all the violence - Compol Williams is not opposed to a tactic used many times under the last government - a Southside state of emergency. This makes it so that police can lock up anyone they suspect of gang activity for 30 days in the first instance.
Now, it's kind of like doing surgery with a blunt instrument - and the new government has been reluctant to engage this extreme and clumsy measure. But, Williams feel it has saved lives:

'Would you support a southside state of emergency to send a bunch of them up to prison as you have in the past before?"
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"I have always said that state of emergency must be a measure of last resort, but the truth be told that is the only language some of them understand and sometime the state of emergency is a measure to save them from themselves, because had it not been for state of emergencies that we have had over the past years some of them may not have been here and so again it helps to save them from themselves and it helps to save the society from them."
