And while ANU caught that cocaine outside Little Belize, the MIT caught a coast guardsman smuggling contraband seafood out Buena Vista, also in the Corozal district.
Just before 1pm today, MIT and BDF personnel stopped a black Mitsubishi Endeavor at a checkpoint on the outskirts of the village. Two passengers were inside, the coast guardsman and his common law wife, along with boxes of Mexican seafood, specifically, 12 boxes of Bass fish fillet amounting to 320.6 pounds, 1 box of salmon amounting to 46 pounds, and 6 boxes of jumbo shrimp amounting to 317.6 pounds.
None of the passengers could provide legal documents for the seafood and so they were detained and escorted to the Customs office at the North Border Cargo section. They will be criminally charged for being in possession of the uncustomed goods. The total value of the seafood was estimated at over $30,000.
The fisheries department will be called in to investigate this matter.
The working theory for investigators is that the seafood may have been smuggled through the waters into Consejo - where the Coast Guard also has a base.
