Tonight, there is quite a buzz over an aggravated assault case in Dangriga - and that's because the person accused is a Zabaneh, 30 year old Elvis from one of the prominent families in the south.
Well, Elvis Zabs is accused of an armed assault - the kind that naturally leads to a remand.
Here's what's been alleged by 32 year old Traffic Officer Felix Lambey. He says that yesterday morning he had put up traffic cones and a "do not enter" sign to block off Havana Street for road works to be done. But, he claims that his old primary school classmate Elvis Zabaneh drove up in his Dodge Pickup truck and told Lambey to move the cones and the signs.
Lambey told him to drive around - but he claims that instead Zabaneh moved one of the cones and drove over the rest and continued to drive down the blocked street. Lambey followed him to his home and told him he would be ticketed. He claims Zabaneh cursed him, and drove off - telling Lambey he would lose his job because he's always sweating him.
He said Zabaneh then pulled up beside him, showed him a gun a in a holster and made very specific threats on his life. He claims Zabaneh also pointed the gun at him. Lambey has requested court action and police detained Elvis Zabaneh and took possession of his Glock pistol. He was formally arrested and charged for Aggravated Assault with a firearm - an offence for which remand is automatic.
So, did he get remanded? History tells us that big names often avoid such things. Well, we know that today his arraignment was delayed because of the absence of a magistrate in Dangriga. So they are reportedly moving him from Dangriga to Belmopan to see a judge. Up to this afternoon, there had been no arraignment in either Dangriga or Belmopan.
