But while the COMPOL won't believe in a truce without a gun surrender, one Belize City man is reminding us that guns are far from the only means of carrying out violence.
That man, a Belize City taxi driver, was caught on camera this afternoon wielding a machete as if he were a swashbuckler. The incident was called into the police as an attempted robbery but when our cameras got on the scene we learned that that was far from the case.
Voice of: Eye Witness
"What I saw is that I think it was a taxi vehicle that received all of a spell but I heard a bang before that and then when I saw him reversing it's because the other guy was running into the compound, right."
"He was trying to rescue himself from the guy from the taxi, noh, that had the machete that wanted to chop him. So, exactly what happened between them I don't know."
Cherisse Halsall:
"So he used your building as a kind of refuge?"
Voice of: Eye Witness
"Yes, yeah the verandah and then the taxi man followed him with a machete right behind him and then he was trying to get in our business but then it was closed, the door was locked so he couldn't have access to the building. Then the taxi man just started to chop the machete going up and down and then I think it caught his arm, around his arm and then he just ran out. He managed to run out and went to pick up a stone by that green house and then that's all and then I called the police and the police came."
Once in custody, the machete - man allegedly admitted that he went after the victim because he'd been quote: "messing with his woman."
