As we showed you before the break, Darrell Tutsi Usher has been charged for possession of an unlicensed weapon and ammunition and remanded.
And even though he has faced a judge and is in jail on remand tonight, many still harbour reservations that because he is a Minister of State's son, or because he has close links with the police, that the cops won't really go all the way with the prosecution and he will get off with no consequence.
But today the Minister of Home Affairs assured us that that won't happen in this situation. Still, speaking via Zoom he added that he doesn't think Usher can really be tied to the murder itself.
Hon. Kareem Musa, Minister of Home Affairs and New Growth Industries
"I make no qualms, Courtney, about the fact that we don't give special treatment to anybody. So nobody can call me as a minister and ask for any special treatment. Mr. Darrel Usher is treated like any other accused person. In this particular instance, though, I don't think there is anything that could tie him to the murder. I think he was in possession of the firearm. I am told that his defense is that he was turning in the firearm to a police officer. So that will have to be investigated. But the point remains, he was in possession of an illegal firearm for which he did not have a license. And so he will have to be charged for that offense. And I believe he is being charged with that offense today."
Courtney Menzies:
"Some people feel like this will be swept under the rug because of who he is."

Hon. Kareem Musa
"Absolutely not. There are no sacred cows in our administration, Courtney. Like I said, we treat every single individual equally and there is no special treatment. Like I said, no one can ask me for any sort of favor like that. They know my personality and my principled position, and that will not bend."
