Shots rang out near Mayflower street this afternoon but it wasn't an exchange of gunfire between rival gangs, instead, the shots fired came from the police.
It happened at about 1:10 pm during what should have been a routine stop and search, but that changed when two loud bangs were heard in the distance. Neighbors say it was a series of pop shots, but the police weren't taking any chances and fired warning shots in the air.
Unfortunately, one of those shots hit 18-year-old Jason Smith in the stomach.
And by the time our cameras got there Smith's neighbors were extremely riled up shouting accusations at the cops. It was only when the dust had settled that we got the real story from Smith's grandmother Sandra Uter, she told us that she watched in shock as Jason collapsed at the foot of her stairs.
Smith is currently admitted to the KHMH and is reportedly in a stable condition.
