Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated fishing continues to threaten Belize's sea spaces and this weekend, Belizean law enforcement made a major fisheries bust inside the Port Honduras Marine Reserve.
Last Thursday, rangers from TIDE (the Toledo Institute for Development and Environment) discovered two separate gill nets - which are banned in Belize - in an area near South Snake Caye. They were retrieved and handed over to the authorities.
Then, on the following day, a team of TIDE rangers and officers of the Belize Coast Guard busted 2 Guatemalan nationals who were illegally fishing in Belizean territorial waters. The Belizean lawmen spotted them fishing near South Snake Caye, and when their vessel was searched, they had all this assortment of marine fisheries products. They have subsequently been handed over to Belize police for criminal charges.
