A Belizean who's wanted in the US is now facing extradition proceedings.
Belmopan businessman 46 year old Osmar Eliaser Correa was accused of intoxicated Manslaughter and assault in a fatal traffic accident in the US 23 years ago.
And now the Americans say they want him to face justice. The father of two was taken to court today where Chief Magistrate Sharon Fraser read the order issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for his extradition to the US where there is a warrant for his apprehension as a fugitive.
He was remanded to prison until March 8th.
Attorney for Correa, David Moralez submitted in court that while he is not challenging the extradition, he is of the view that the incident which is alleged to have occured in 1998, and since then his client has been living in Belize and traversing the Western and Northern borders, and never had an issue. Morales argued for bail but the Police prosecutor said that the US is objecting due to flight risk.
Chief Magistrate Fraser deliberated and ended up agreeing with the State, and denied him bail.
He can, however, seek bail though the Supreme Court.
The matter was adjourned until March 8th and Correa was remanded into custody at the Belize Central Prison.
