Yesterday, major news broke in the British Virgin Islands when the leader of the Caribbean Territory. That's when Premier Andrew Alturo Fahie, and the territory's Port Director, Oleanvine Maynard, were arrested in Miami on drug trafficking and money laundering charges.
They allegedly went to a Miami airport to check on a major cash payment which was reportedly promised to them by an undercover DEA operative, who was pretending to be a member of a Mexican drug cartel.
Documents we've seen from the US District Court for the Southern District of Florida indicate that a career DEA agent conducted an extended sting operation. A confidential source working for the DEA went undercover and pretended to be a cartel member who wanted to smuggle cocaine transported from Colombia via boat, which was destined for the United States. The confidential source's cover story was that he was a representative of a Lebanese Hezbollah operative who was trying to smuggle drugs through the port of the British Virgin Islands.
Here's more on the story from a news report out of the British Virgin Islands:
Late this evening it was reported by the Guardian UK that "Britain is poised to impose a form of direct rule over the British Virgin Islands after the Caribbean territory's premier was arrested in Miami on suspicion of drug running, and a UK-appointed commission of inquiry found rampant failings in governance."
