24-year-old Harold Thompson, a police constable attached to Police Precinct 1 in Belize City, is out on bail after being taken to court for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend.

He was arraigned today before Senior Magistrate Tricia Pitts-Anderson on three offenses: damage to property, common assault, and harm. The charges are connected to a police report that his girlfriend made to police officers. She told investigators of the police's Family Violence Unit that last Friday, Thompson allegedly visited her home and began accusing her of engaging in romantic relations with her ex-boyfriend. He reportedly slapped her to the left side of the face, and that's when they got into a heated argument.

Thompson allegedly left and returned the following day with a taser. The complainant says that Thompson approached her threateningly, and that's when she picked up a pint bottle and threw it at him. He allegedly ran toward her, grabbed her in a chokehold, and she fell to the ground. The complainant says that she threw rocks at him, and he allegedly tased her on the left leg. She also alleged that Thompson returned back to her home yesterday, punched a hole into her wall, and broke her fan and her mirror. She reportedly retaliated by throwing a pint bottle at him, which struck him. He allegedly ran toward her and kicked her in the stomach. She fell to the ground, and she claims that Thompson continued to kick her multiple times on her foot and on her arm. A doctor has classified her injuries as harm.

When Thompson was arraigned today, his colleague, the on-duty police prosecutor, objected to bail. When the presiding magistrate asked him why she should grant him bail, he told the court that his girlfriend made up the allegations to get him behind bars.

After consideration, the judge granted him bail of 2,000 dollars, which he was able to meet. His next court date is set for August 29, 2022.
