And while the cops already had the Belizean men on their radar, how did a former Canadian soldier get mixed up in a mass shooting?
Well, we know Smith is currently living in Sittee River, but earlier this year, he was still in Canada, operating a small business after retiring from the army ten years ago. Smith had fought 2 tours in Afghanistan and served during Operation Medusa where 12 Canadians were killed, 40 wounded and, eventually - reports say a number of soldiers in that operation committed suicide as a result of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
As his coping mechanism, Smith started a craft business to employ veterans. That was, until COVID came. And in an interview he did with YouTuber, "Ronin On Trail", he explained that he had plans to relocate to Belize to start fresh. Here is a snippet of that interview, where he also spoke about his mental state post-military.
Police say Smith had been living in Sittee River for a few years.
