The Social Security Board is also starting another scholarship program, but this time, the target audience is Belizeans who want to pursue employment and trade skills to become self-sufficient.
It's an off-shoot of their program from last year called Empowering 40. The SSB tells us that this program received so much interest countrywide that they're now expanding it under a new name, SSB Empowering You.
Here's more on the new scholarship program from the Social Security Board's Corporate Relations Officer:
Mowava Fuller - Corporate Relations Officer, SSB
"Today represents the culmination of our traditional scholarship program, where we started these 55 scholarship opportunities for Belizean students. But it also represents the introduction of a new initiative we have coming on board, which is called Empowering You."
"So empowering you is going to be an initiative whereby Social Security is providing scholarship opportunities to anywhere between 150 to 200 Belarusians. And they will be getting training in re-skilling. They're going to be getting courses like barbering, cake decorating, and sewing, just to name a few. So that's coming next for the Social Security Board because we know that it's important to empower a generation. And we know if we empower one, it's never just one. We're empowering an entire family. We're empowering an entire community. And we will want to work to change the narrative for many of these Belizeans."
"We did another initiative called Empowering 40 for our 40th anniversary last year and what that did for us was that it allowed us to see the need in the communities because we received over 250 applications, and it was only 40 persons that we were actually giving these skills training to. So, the demand is there, and we recognized that, and we're going to do more in the community because we are committed to empowering lives through education and through opportunities."
