And while cops are investigating that fatal road traffic incident, three of their own have been found guilty of manslaughter and are in jail tonight because of it. Back in March of 2016, San Pedro resident, Edwin Ixpatec, was reportedly beaten by three police officers while in their custody. The next morning, he was found unconscious inside his cell. He was given medical treatment, but eventually died at the KHMH.
The three cops responsible, Romelio Logan, Reydel Teck, and Jashimir Cobb were today found guilty of manslaughter by Justice Ricardo O'Neil Sandcroft in the Supreme Court.
They had initially been charged with murder, but that charge was later downgraded to manslaughter and they were all granted bail of $3,000 by the lower court. However, after the ruling this morning, they were all remanded back into custody at the Belize Central Prison until November 9, when they will receive their sentencing.
At the time of the incident, the three officers had responded to a report at Banyan Bay Resort of a man behaving disorderly in the sea. Ixpatec was taken out of the sea and escorted to the police station, where witnesses saw the officers brutalize him. The cops were represented by attorney Oscar Selgado.
