So, overall October has started in the worst way - with three murders in 3 days, coming off the last 24 hours of September that saw two murders.
In total that's 5 murders countrywide in 5 days.
We asked Commissioner of police Chester Williams about the troubling start to October - and he said, don't blame the cops:
Jules Vasquez
"In October alone already, we are only at October 3rd - 3 murders by blade, so to speak. People in the public will say crime is out of control."
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"But, I'll ask you the question, what could the police have done to prevent the murder in Hopkins? What could the police have done to prevent the murder in Benque? What could the police have done to prevent the chopping in PG this morning? These are the type of murders that I refer to as silly murders. They just sprang out of nowhere and I would hope the public look at them for what they truly are, because certainly, it is not a reflection of poor policing. It pains me so much when I see that police officers are being criticized because of murders for the simple fact that this is the only country in the world where the police is being blamed for murders. We have murders occurring all over the world and the police is not the one to be blamed. We need to lay the blame where the blame belongs - on the persons who are perpetrating these murders and if it is that we continue to blame the police and blame the minister and blame the government, then obviously we are telling the criminals you know what, you continue commit crime and then other people will get the blame for whatever it is that you're doing."
