Tonight, a well known Belizean is in one of India's most feared prisons, "Tihar" - in New Delhi after he was caught with over 20 pounds of heroin a week ago.

According to a document obtained by 7News, 70 year old Francis Marion Gegg, a resident of Eve Street in Belize City was intercepted at the Indira Ghandi Int'l airport in New Dehli on October 30th on a flight from South Africa through Doha. A police report from India says he had "9.95 kilograms - or 22 pounds - of off white colored powdery substance suspected to be heroine." Indian authorities estimate the value at 17.2 million Belize dollars. 7News has confirmed that the notice you see on your screen has been received through official channels by the Foreign Affairs Ministry in Belize.

Indian media reports say the heroin was concealed in a CARRY-ON bag with a false bottom. When they lifted that they found two tubes of suspected heroin. Gegg was arrested and the Consular office of Belize in India was contacted to alert his family.

Francis Gegg gained prominence in Belize in the early 2000's when he ran as an independent political candidate. Though a fringe candidate with little popular support, he has been an outspoken political activist in Belize. His arrest for such a serious offense in a faraway place has surprised many Belizeans familiar with his history of activism and as a self styled spiritual healer.
