A man was arraigned in court today for another burglary that occurred last weekend. We reported that someone had broken into the building behind the Magistrate's Court that is normally used by the Prosecution Branch.
And today, 32-year-old Kriston Smith was in court to answer for it. Smith, who claimed that he had been a health inspector up until early last year, reportedly trespassed into the Magistrate's Court building on Treasury Lane on February 23 and stole an assortment of tools.
He was read a second count of burglary for also entering a home on Dickenson Street on February 25th and stealing another welding machine and more tools.
He pleaded not guilty and told the magistrate that he knew about the burglary and even assisted the police in retrieving some of the items. When the Magistrate told him that he didn't need to explain, he said he wanted to change his plea to guilty, since he didn't think he would be able to get enough evidence to prove his innocence.
Smith was granted bail in the sum of $6,000 dollars with the condition that he must sign in at the Belama Police Station once a week and cannot leave the country without the permission of the court.
After his arraignment, he was taken into another courtroom where he was accused of a theft. The allegations are that last Thursday, he stole a window louver and a wheelbarrow that belonged to another man. The prosecutor in that case also objected to bail but he was once again offered it in the sum of $1,000 plus one surety of the same amount. He was not able to post bail and remains in police custody.
