And while he hopes the Lake I residents will keep the area clean, he's also pleading for the Plues Street residents to do the same. You've heard one resident, attorney Norman Rodriguez, complain about the garbage that piles up at the corner, hindering vehicles from turning onto the street. And apart from it being unsightly, it's also a major health concern.

But according to the mayor, the garbage is put there for illicit purposes, and it's the police who will have to crack down on the perpetrators.

Bernard Wagner, Mayor of Belize City
"You see that area? That area Plues Street is a notorious area and many people have tried that to talk about that issue on Plues Street. The issue is that even if we move those garbage, the guys in that area, that element, want to keep that garbage there because it serves as a blockage for when the police or the law enforcement come in that area and so we could put in garbage bins, they won't use the garbage bins because it's a situation where they want the garbage there, it's not about anybody just throwing it there, and we have to, that's a police matter, the police have to really begin o police that area and see who is responsible for putting those garbage there but the city, we just have to continue to clean it and try but we try our best, as we clean it, it comes back, so it has to be a collaboration now between the city council, the community in the area and the police."
