And in crime news, a mentally ill woman who was reported missing sparked concerns when a video began circulating. It shows her performing sexual acts, with claims that the person on camera is the same missing woman. Today, the ComPol says he is aware of the video and they are looking into it to see if rape charges can apply since the woman may not have been able to consent due to her mental illness.
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"I have seen the video and I had forwarded to to CIB, Belize City and direct that they launch an investigation. One must consider the fact that a person who is not mentally stable is not in a position to consent for sex. However, the police will have to get that evidence from a competent person, a psychiatrist to be able to say to the police that they have evaluated the person and the person do have a history of mental illness and based on that the person is not in a position to be able to consent."
"Having to obtain that, the police can take action against those individual for rape. I think in a certain part of the video, even though the young lady may not have been mentally stable, I think I heard her say stop and despite that the sexual act continued. So even with a woman who can consent, who is mentally stable, if the woman in the course of sexual intercourse say to you stop, you must stop. So can you now imagine with a person who is able to give consent. So, for me it's a very serious matter and it must be treated as such. The police will work in tandem with the women's department and human development to see what we can do to ensure that a proper of action is done to hold those young men accountable for what they did to that young lady."
