Tonight 7 alleged Mexican cartel hitmen remain detained by Belizean law enforcement at an unspecified location in Belize. But, the case may not be as sensational as has been previously billed. And that's because police cannot get any confirmation that their passports are fake or that they are linked with a cartel. The commissioner of police this evening confirmed to 7News that the 7 men's 48 hours of detention have elapsed and the men will likely be turned over to Immigration where they will likely get an order to leave.

He says investigation so far has shown that the men came into the country to work illegally with a local road construction company. They were taken in to police by one of the employees of the company. Since then, police have been trying to get some confirmation on their travel documents from Mexico - but they have gotten no reply from law enforcement there. So, tonight, the so - called sicarios may be one step closer to returning home.

The buzz around them started on Monday morning when a Chetumal online news outlet named "Informativo Chetumal" said they are sicarios, or cartel hitmen sent here to kill a prominent drug figure in the Corozal District - and that their passports are all fake. Again, there is no confirmation of that tonight from the competent authorities in Mexico. But later in the news we'll hear one man - Cecil Martinez - who was held hostage by the cartel and swears that one of the men was his captor.
