There's currently a moratorium on gun licenses - which you'll hear about shortly - but while no licenses are currently being issued, many unlicensed guns are on the streets, and last night, the police picked up a prohibited one.
While a rush of children were out trick or treating, gunshots were fired on Kelly Street in the Northside of Belize City. And cops later found the weapon in a bag belonging to an 18-year-old girl. Today the ComPol told us more about it.
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"I know that police has responded to information of shots fired in the Cinderella Plaza area and that took them all the way to Southside, I think on Welch street, where they met a group of minors who were trick or treating and a search was conducted in the bag one of the minors were carrying and that resulted in the discovery of a.45 calibre pistol. The minor was detained and was taken to the police station I believe by now he should have been arrested and charged for that firearm."
Courtney Menzies:
"How dangerous is this particular firearm, we know we hear about 9mm pistols all the time but we don't hear about this particular firearm."

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
".45 calibre are prohibited weapons and so it is a prohibited weapon, yes it is extremely dangerous, a dangerous weapon and I am happy that the police were able to remove it off the street before they could have done anything with it."
The four persons found with the firearm were 19-year-old Erak King, 18-year-old Jadaey Williams, a 17-year-old and a 16-year-old minor. The gun also had three live rounds of ammunition.
