And Waight's murder was the first gang related murder in months. There has been a serious decline in the number of murders this year, and the trend may ultimately set a record for the last decade. Though each life lost is one too many, the Minister confirmed that the stats are looking impressively lower than last year.
Kareem Musa, Minister of Home Affairs
"It's been a year of counting numbers and I hate to look at people as statistics because I think right now we are at 78 for the year which again is an extremely low number of murders going all the way back to 2007, we are even 24 less than last year, which was a record year in itself, and so while the numbers look good, at the end of the day, we are aiming for zero crime, for zero violence and so the work is always there, even though the numbers look good, at the end of the day, we cannot look at people as numbers, we have to look at each family, look at each constituency, look at each area, and try to see how we can harness peace in these areas."
