The police who captured themselves stripping and humiliating a mentally challenged person within the police station has been making headlines all this week.

And it has not escaped the attention of the former Minister of National Security, Mike Peyrefitte. Peyrefitte says that the department is in need of a police purge.

Mike Peryfitte, UDP Chairman

"Well it's not the first time, its not the first time in recent months? Wasn't there one just when one particular set of police officers were forcing two people to have sex or something like that? I mean look these people are at their wits end, these people are frustrated out of order and we are not screening properly people who are applying and being accepted as police officers. The reports are that these gangs are encouraging people who are criminals but have no police record to join the police department. So that when they become police officers they are actually criminals in police uniforms and so they can facilitate their gang affiliated people. That's the intelligence that we are getting. And we don't seem to want to be able to screen people because we are so desperate to have numbers. And because when you are desperate to have numbers then you have people infiltrating the security services. That is another part of the issue. You have people with criminal minds joining the police department and some with criminal minds who were there before and remain there and have good positions in the police department but they are exploiting it for criminal activity instead of good police work. That's the type of atmosphere that leads to things like that that is unacceptable. A purge needs to happen, but I believe that the management style of the current leadership of the police department you have so many assistant commissioners of police and so many senior superintendents and they Not being allowed to command their units."
