As you heard, the PUP council says it inherited a bankrupt council - drowning in debt - with internal controls that would make a pandas shop look good.

Quick - if not quite artful on the comeback - the UDP chairman's rebuttal to the council's claims is that how could they have just noticed after years in office:

Mike Peryfitte, UDP Chairman
"What is today's date? January 24th 2024? They came into office when? Let me see if your maths is correct 2021 March sir. They just realized after three years that they are in financial trouble? Listen to me the life of a council service is three years, when you get in you supposed to realize it within a couple of days that you are short of you are short. Which i don't accept at all at all. You have three years to build up your treasury so what have they been doing? Nothing that's the problem all they can do is look at what the UDP did before they came into office because they have done nothing in the three years. Point to me one project that they have done in San Pedro from a city council standpoint and it's not just San Pedro you know. Belize city point to me one. Look at the whole country point to me one. We just came from Corozal today show me one, a road a bridge any project that the PUP has started and finished or even just started since they came into power in 2020. Not one not a single one they have done nothing. So if they want to use their time looking at what the UDP did of course that's all they can do. That's why everytime they open a new building or open a new road those are UDP projects sir, they are so low and so desperate they even steal UDP commercials."
